About Public Pulse

Public Pulse builds the communication and decision-making layer that modern parliamentary offices rely on. We handle parliamentary data at scale. Thousands of interactions per week flow through our platform, paired with drafting, approval workflows, CRM tracking, and real-time collaboration tools.

Our platform is already in use across parliamentary offices in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. We're expanding internationally and growing fast.

About the Role

Designing for government is different from designing consumer apps, and different from most B2B SaaS. The users are parliamentary staff under constant time pressure. The data is sensitive constituent correspondence. The workflows involve multiple people with different roles, permissions, and political sensitivities. And the consequences of getting it wrong are real - a poorly designed approval flow could mean a constituent gets the wrong reply, or worse, no reply at all.

We are looking for a Product Designer to own the end-to-end experience of a platform used daily by government offices across Australia and expanding internationally. You will design everything from complex multi-step approval workflows to AI-powered drafting interfaces with citation displays and confidence indicators.

You will be the founding designer working closely with engineering and directly with parliamentary office staff. You will conduct user research sessions in Canberra with chiefs of staff and electorate officers, run usability testing on prototypes with people who process hundreds of emails per week, and maintain a design system in Figma that scales as we grow.

This is a role for someone who wants to be deeply embedded in the product and its users. You will not hand off designs and move on - you will see them implemented, watch real users interact with them, and iterate based on what you learn. The feedback loop is tight, the problems are hard, and the impact is tangible.

Responsibilities

  • Design end-to-end user flows for email management, AI-powered drafting, multi-step approval workflows, CRM, and task management
  • Conduct user research with government staff - in-person sessions at parliamentary offices and remote sessions with electorate officers across Australia
  • Build and maintain the design system in Figma, ensuring consistency and scalability across a growing product surface area
  • Design AI-native interfaces - how do you present AI-generated drafts with inline citations, confidence levels, and human approval steps in a way that builds trust rather than anxiety?
  • Collaborate closely with engineers on interaction design, motion, and responsive behaviour - your designs will be implemented faithfully
  • Ensure accessibility compliance (WCAG 2.1 AA) across all features - government software must be accessible to all Australians
  • Contribute to product strategy and roadmap decisions based on research insights and design thinking

You May Be a Good Fit If You

  • Have 4+ years of product design experience, with significant time on complex B2B or SaaS applications
  • Have a portfolio that demonstrates end-to-end product thinking - from research and problem framing through to polished, shipped interfaces
  • Are expert-level in Figma, with experience building and maintaining component libraries and design systems from scratch
  • Have conducted real user research - interviews, usability tests, contextual inquiries, and synthesis - not just designed from assumptions or analytics
  • Understand accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) and inclusive design as foundational, not optional
  • Can work autonomously as the founding designer, making confident decisions while staying genuinely open to feedback
  • Care about the details - you notice the 4px misalignment, the inconsistent hover state, the label that does not quite make sense

Strong Candidates May Also Have

  • Experience designing for complex workflows involving multiple user roles, permissions, and approval chains
  • Experience designing AI-powered interfaces - generated content, confidence indicators, human-in-the-loop controls
  • Background in govtech, enterprise software, or regulated industries
  • Experience with design for internationalisation and multi-language support
  • Motion design skills or experience with interaction prototyping tools

  • Strong accessibility knowledge (WCAG 2.1 AA) as foundational practice
  • Autonomous and decisive as a founding designer, open to feedback
